The New Steinway Hall
New York's Steinway Hall Opens To The Public April 15th 2016
Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan — one block away from Times Square at 43rd Street and Avenue of the Americas — Steinway & Sons has opened its new flagship: Steinway Hall. Much more than a state-of-the-art retail and performance space, Steinway Hall is a cultural destination where artists and ideas meet, where collaborations are born between musicians and instruments that make our world a more beautiful place.
Designed by the internationally renowned Selldorf Architects, the new location brings together Steinway's storied heritage with new musical and technological innovations in a contemporary setting. Inside Steinway Hall, guests will find many details that reference the materials, craftsmanship and instruments that the company is lauded for, from end-grain oak flooring that recalls former iterations of Steinway Hall to recital hall seats covered in an Imperial Yellow fabric that is the same color found inside the action of a Steinway & Sons piano. Other features include a custom, bentwood decorative ceiling, and acoustic paneling in the concert hall that evokes the exquisite woods used to make each Steinway.
‘I believe that we have created an extraordinary destination for music that embodies Steinway & Sons’ heritage of excellence and craftsmanship.’
Annabelle Selldorf
Steinway & Sons
An artistic centerpiece of the new Steinway & Sons New York is an installation by the artist Spencer Finch. Titled Newton’s Theory of Color and Music (The Goldberg Variations), the work is an interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” that explores the intersection of music, color and emotion, through light. Suspended over the stairway, this installation not only catches the attention of passersby, but invites Steinway Artists down to the piano selection area and beckons audiences to the world-class performance venue, both located on the lower level.
Steinway Hall houses a 74-seat recital venue, an ideal space for intimate and moving live performances also outfitted with a state-of-the-art custom Steinway Lyngdorf sound system, live-streaming capabilities that allow musicians and audiences from around the world to connect to this cultural hub, rehearsal studios for artists and students, and a recording studio where performances for the new Steinway Spirio can be captured. The recital space is the beating heart of Steinway Hall, the embodiment of Steinway & Sons’ commitment to celebrating arts and culture.
